Auger-Aliassime downs Struff to achieve second spherical of Australian Open

MELBOURNE — Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime superior to the second spherical of the Australian Open on Monday with a 6-3, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 win over Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff.

The 29-ranked Canadian, who received the Adelaide Worldwide final week for his sixth ATP title, dominated the match, firing 19 aces to Struff’s 15 and making one double fault to Struff’s 4. Auger-Aliassime received 85 p.c of his first factors and broke Struff eight occasions.

Auger-Aliassime will face Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina within the second spherical.

Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo performs his first Australian Open main-draw match Monday evening towards Italy’s Luca Nardi, whereas Denis Shapovalov, of Richmond Hill, Ont., faces Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut earlier Tuesday.

In girls’s singles, Vancouver’s Rebecca Marino will face Britain’s Katie Boulter within the first spherical.

Leylah Fernandez, of Laval, Que., groups up with Ukraine’s Nadiia Kichenok to play Australia’s Talia Gibson and Maya Joint in girls’s doubles. Ottawa’s Gabriella Dabrowski and New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe, the No. 2 seeds, will face American pair Danielle Collins and Desirae Krawczyk within the opening spherical.
